The biggest challenges of the hospitality industry: sustainability, hygiene and quality

Recent years have fundamentally reshaped the hospitality industry. Guests' expectations today go far beyond a pleasant environment and high-quality service: hygiene, safety and sustainable operation have become increasingly important. Businesses therefore face complex challenges that affect operational efficiency, the guest experience and environmental responsibility all at once.
In a study, Miele Professional set out to find out what difficulties operators of hotels, guesthouses, cafés, leisure centres and other hospitality venues encounter day after day, particularly in laundry and cleaning services. The results highlighted three key themes: sustainability, hygiene and maintaining quality.
Sustainability: no longer an option but an expectation
Environmentally conscious operation is no longer just a competitive advantage but a basic consumer expectation. According to 89 percent of the businesses taking part in the study, sustainability plays an important role in the organisation's values and operations.
In practice, however, putting this into effect is a serious challenge. Half of the respondents do not have their own laundry and do not plan to set one up. This is problematic because with outsourced laundry services it is much harder to monitor the environmental impact of cleaning processes, energy use or emissions from transport.
The study also revealed that businesses considering setting up their own laundry system attach particular importance to energy-efficient solutions:
- 65 percent say guests expect energy-efficient operation,
- 84 percent consider reducing emissions important,
- and 88 percent regard sustainability as a decisive factor when choosing a service provider.
On-site laundries can be advantageous in several ways: they can reduce the environmental impact of transport, moderate energy use and help optimise costs in the long term. Even details such as energy-saving equipment or the use of environmentally friendly detergents make a difference.
Hygiene: a cornerstone of the guest experience
Cleanliness has always been an important part of hospitality, but today hygiene has become a top priority. According to 92 percent of respondents, guests are now much more sensitive to cleanliness than before, and the same proportion believe that laundry quality directly influences the overall guest experience.
Maintaining an impeccable level of hygiene is not just an aesthetic matter but is crucial from a health and business perspective. The right wash programmes and disinfection procedures are essential for protecting against pathogens, especially in environments with high guest numbers.
If laundry tasks are carried out by an external provider, businesses can partly lose control over these processes. An infection or epidemic situation could not only endanger guests' safety but also pose a serious reputational risk. Hygienically clean textiles are therefore now a basic expectation.
Quality: small details decide the guest experience
Guests often form their opinion of a hotel or restaurant based on small details. Snow-white bed linen, soft towels or a perfectly clean tablecloth all help make a visit a truly premium experience.
According to the study, most businesses believe that having their own laundry can help maintain high quality:
- 93 percent say protecting their reputation is an important factor in setting up their own laundry,
- and 85 percent believe that in-house laundry helps maintain service standards.
Respondents also place great emphasis on working with reliable partners who deliver high quality, as laundry and cleaning processes directly affect guest satisfaction.
Where is the hospitality industry heading?
Based on the study's results, it is clear that the future of the hospitality industry will be shaped by three factors: sustainable operation, impeccable hygiene and consistently high quality.
Businesses must meet guests' growing expectations and the challenges of operational efficiency at the same time. Technological and service solutions that simplify operation while supporting environmentally conscious and safe operation are playing an increasingly important role in this.
Competition is getting fiercer, and guests are choosing more consciously than ever. The businesses that can succeed in the long term are those able to balance quality, hygiene safety and sustainability – without any loss to the guest experience.
